Buddhist Journalism in a Time of Polarization
Tricycle’s primary mission has been to disseminate Buddhist teachings; provide an open forum for Buddhists of all traditions; and to engage the broader culture from Buddhist perspectives. Over the years, while our writers have from time to time taken a stand on social and political issues, the magazine itself has remained nonaligned. In an inclusive and independent spirit, we have eschewed outside affiliations. Occasionally, however—and especially in recent years, in an ever more polarized social climate—we have been urged to take strong positions, or to publish pieces we have considered overly polemical. Editor in Chief, James Shaheen will talk about the editorial view that has evolved at Tricycle over the past 35 years.
About the Facilitator :
James Shaheen has worked in the publishing field for nearly 40 years. He left Forbes magazine in 1996 to join Tricycle, which at the time was entering its fifth year of publication. After serving a year as associate publisher, in 1997, James became Tricycle’s publisher. Four years later, in 2001, James succeeded Helen Tworkov as editor in chief and has served in that role ever since. James has worked to maintain the editorial independence and nonsectarian approach of the magazine in he spirit of the founders’ intent.
